Presentation

Saint-Germain-en-Laye, in the privileged setting of an artist's residence, the Maurice Denis Departmental Museum presents an original collection devoted to Symbolist and Nabis painters, Post-Impressionists and the Pont-Aven group.
Created by the Yvelines department in 1976 thanks to a large donation made by the Denis family, the museum is dedicated to the painter and theoretician Maurice Denis, to Symbolist and Nabis artists and to their time. Since 2002, it has had the “Musée de France” label.

The initial fund of the museum comes from an exceptional donation made in 1976 by the family of Maurice Denis. Since then, the collections have been enriched by numerous donations and acquisitions of works by Symbolist and Nabis artists. Works by painters who have marked the history of modern art are thus presented: Gauguin, Sérusier, Filiger, Vallotton, Bonnard, Vuillard, Verkade, Ranson, Lacombe, Redon, Mucha, Anquetin...

MAURICE DENIS (1870-1943) “Remember that a painting, before being a battle horse, a naked woman or any anecdote, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order. »
Maurice Denis in Art and Criticism, 1890

Maurice Denis was both a painter and theoretician, critic and art historian, decorator, glass painter, engraver, illustrator... so we invite you to extend your visit to the Maurice Denis Departmental Museum with other explorations, particularly in museums, churches and public buildings.
